MCHS: Addressing a School and Community Concern

Dear Minooka Community High School Families,

Earlier this week MCHS District #111 Board of Education sent a communication condemning any actions of racism or discrimination. Unfortunately, we have been made aware of a reprehensible post from one of our students. While we will not discuss any student with our public due to student privacy laws, please know we are investigating this incident and will discipline accordingly.

The events of the last several weeks have impacted us as a society and community, as we've watched racial tragedies expose prejudices and injustices. During this time of local and national crisis, MCHS District #111’s position is clear - we oppose bigotry, hatred, inequality in all forms, indirect or overt.

We recognize and empathize with the pain that our minority community is feeling at this time. It is difficult to put into words how profoundly sad we are without ringing hollow with those who are impacted. Please know that we understand that we will be judged by our actions and not our words. We are also aware of the trends on social media depicting our school in a racist light due to the reprehensible actions of some of our students. That is not something we are proud of and we are working hard to change that and make certain that Minooka Community High School is a more welcoming environment for all our students. 

Last August, our Board of Education and staff participated in Cultural Competence training, and we recently completed a system-wide cultural assessment led by Erika Walker-Thomas of The Walker-Thomas Group. We appreciate the students, parents, community members, teachers, and administrators who have volunteered to participate on our Equity and Diversity Committee. Although we feel the work of that committee has been valuable, their commitment, coupled with the results of the Cultural Assessment findings will certainly gain traction in the coming months.  

Something we love about our community are the values we share. We encourage all of us to not be overwhelmed by the enormity of what we face today. Individually and collectively there is much work to be done and we all have a part to play. You may not know how to start, and that is okay. Read, listen, reach out to one another, and offer empathy and support. Listen intensely and seek understanding.

We appreciate the thoughtfulness of all involved that have ensured our district will be made aware of such acts, today and in the future.

Please continue to stay safe and healthy during these difficult times in our society and community.

Good Morning,

I hope that this message finds you and your families safe and healthy.  In light of recent events, we felt it appropriate to reach out to our stakeholders by sharing that the MCHS District #111 Board of Education vehemently rejects and condemns racism, hatred, bigotry, and discrimination in all forms.  We continue to be committed to ensuring that our students and employees feel respected and accepted at MCHS.

During these uneasy times, we want to remind each and every one of our students and stakeholders that you are welcome at MCHS, and we look forward to our continued partnerships as we strive to live our mission:  Strengthen Mastery, Collaboration, High Expectations, and Success for All Students.
